Can you help me with simple driving directions in Chicago?
I need a quick and easy way to get from Devon & Western in the north-eastern section, to 87th and Ashland in the south-eastern section. I have job training and I drive there every day, and I will keep on doing so for two more weeks. I'm tired of driving down Western the WHOLE way. I'm a country boy, from the sticks in Minnesota, so please make it simple. I have a city map but it's so freakin’ huge; I swear that thing is close to life-size. I don't trust MapQuest or any other online driving directions website.

- wishing the best in finding your way... what about mapfinders.com...
- the Dan Ryan will get you right down to 87th but you'd have to head west a little to hop on that. Or just take Western down to 90/94 then stay on 94. That looks like the quickest and easiest way.
- Unfortunately there is no easy way but you can take the Kennedy thru downtown where it becomes the Dan Ryan and take that South to 87th and then west to Ashland, you could also take Western down To Belmont and then East on Belmont to Ashland and then all the way South to 87th. this way is safe but when you get South of Cermak rd. keep your doors locked just in case
- KNUCKLEHEAD!! western in under constuction... I can bike down faster then people drive down that road. 1) You can always use CLARK which splits into ASHLAND (go right) that will take you right there. NO turns. Ashland moves faster than western most people take Western or lake shore drive. 2) For local travels Go down to Montrose and take it west to Cailfornia to get around WESTERN traffic between diversity and montrose. 3) Go out and get lost. You have to learn how to get around the city. once you learn your 5 major north-south streets (Ashland, Western, Damen, Kedize, Pulaski), some good east-west streets ( North, Irving Park, Foster, Peterson) and the 5 diagonal streets you will be fine. ( Clyborne, Lincoln, Milwaukee, Elston and Grand) The diagonal street give some of the long time locals issue so relax and enjoy the city. As for the map being life size, fold it up and just look at the portion that applies to you.
- I have been to Chicago, But not enough to know my way around such a huge city.
- Just a matter of two weeks: continue to do what you are doing now, that's the best! (Clark, DanRyan etc. will drive you mad! You have done this, Western, and you are familiar with this, carry on, do this, don't try to change now!)
- google maps doesn't steer you wrong when getting directions. they are simple, and you can follow on the map instead if you are more of a visual person (like me).
- I would do Lake Shore Drive and then head west. Don't touch any interstates because you will be on them forever.
- Get to the Kennedy "90" East and stay on it until it turns into the Dan Ryan expressway, stay straight until you see an exit for around 87th street. If there isn't one there get off at 85th or around there, but the middle of the expressway only lets you off once in a while so read the signs and go to the right section of the expressway at least 5 miles before exiting Good luck! Tip you can use map quest to just look at the map without directions too if you don;t trust them.
