Aerial View Maps

How could I determine exact coordinates of any point on a topo map?

I'd like to enter these numbers into my GPS so it could lead me to those points. (Assuming that my GPS is not mappable.)

  1. Use tha scale (normally at the bottom) and a ruler.
  2. I'll assume you are using paper copies of USGS maps. Maps from other countries may have varied coordinate systems, but most will have latitude and longitude along the borders of the map. You use this to determine the coordinate values for the point you are seeking. There are plastic scales made to fit 7.5 minute USGS maps and other scales, that make this quicker. Of course, if you have some mapping software, you can get the points just by putting your mouse pointer over the spot on the map you want to find. I've carried my laptop to the field just for this purpose at times, but paper doesn't ever have a dead battery. This site shows the basic method: http://gpsscales.com/chapter2.htm
