PPL holders can't charge for carrying passengers,can they charge for say aerial photography,crop spraying etc?

- No. You can't accept payment for anything other than a fair cost share for the cost of operating the airplane.
- in short No. To receive payment or any remuneration for any services offered as a pilot of an aircraft (while acting in that capacity) requires that you have a commercial pilot license. I think the only exception to this is if while in flight you are called on to assist in Search and Rescue operations you are reimbursed for your time and any fees/hire cost/fuel you use in that time. Doesn't happen often!
- An aircraft salesman can fly an aircraft with the potential customer(s) to make a demonstration if he has a PPL - He is paid a commission for the sale of the aircraft, not for his flying -
