How can I tell the difference between an emergent and submergent coastline on a topo map?

Like certain features of each coastline that will help me identify if it's emerging or submerging.

  1. Emergent coastlines will have raised beach features, often low relief stepped topography showing abandoned clifflines.River estuaries will tend to be narrow and relatively steep as the uplift may exceed the rate of downcutting. A classic submergent coast feature is Rias or "drowned valleys" as sea levels rise encroach on pre-existing river valleys giving inlets that extends some distance inland. Lots of small offshore islands can also be typical indicating a drowning of existing topography I am sure there are other things but too tired to remember
