I'm getting ready to buy a Magellan handheld GPS "Satellite Navigator". Says "No good for streets" but camping?
My question is, if it doesn't work for streets, how will it work for camping? Will I be able to use it anywhere but the back country? Should I invest in a better one, or get this one just for camping? Would a normal one work for the back country too?? THANKS, here's the posted inf: MAGELLAN GPS 300 "SATELLITE NAVIGATOR" ....Includes manual and original box ....Portable, hand-held ....Tracks 12 satellites ....24 hour batt life on 2 aa batteries ....Waterproof ....Mark your route with up to 100 stored positions. ....Keeps a turn by turn record of your track in and out. ....Great for geocaching, hunting, hiking and exploring -- even fishing in remote areas. ....DOES NOT HAVE ROAD/STREET MAP CAPABILITIES.

- I have the now primitive Garmin geko 201 it is good enough to help me find geocaches but with out a map feature I have no real time clue as to where turns, roads, etc. are until I am on top of them already. it can only point me in a direction and sometimes that is a little off. I am saving up my pennies to buy a full featured unit that has the Topo road maps already in it. I would recommend you do too.
- Hand-held GPSr give only a straight line from start to destination. It will not give you turn by turn directions.
- Although Magellan makes many good GPS units Garmin is by far the best in technology and for the same money. I went through the same dilemma you did when I first purchased a handheld. My suggestion is the Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX. It has everything you seem to be looking for. I use http://www.gpsunitsandaccessories.com/ for my gps needs, they are reasonably priced and have always provided good service. They will also help you if you have more questions concerning a purchase. Best wishes on your gps adventures.
- Your answer is in the posted information - it does not have the ability to download road and street info, so you can't use it in your car for navigation. It'll work fine for camping and other outdoor uses. Consider getting one in which you can dowload topographic maps for these outdoor activities, though.
