Is this an ironic thing to happen?

I did my placement for my University course about 5 miles from my University. The whole of my course are now exploring maps, and digital models of the place where I did my placement. It was just coincidence, and has made the course that much easier. Others did their placement elsewhere. Is this ironic, just coincidence, or both? Does irony have to involve someones short coming? I.e. You work for the AA, and have been fixing cars all day on the road. You drive home, you break down. You need to call the AA.
