  1. Hi, Scale is the ratio of a measure any feature on the photograph and the measure of the same feature on the ground. For example if you would like to determine the scale of the aerial photograph, you will have to measure a feature ( one side of a building, road length between two junctions etc.) on the photograph using a measuring scale. Let us say that it is 2 centimeters (for example) Measure the same distance on the ground, in reality. let us assume it is 2000 cms (or 2 meters). The scale will be 20/2000 = 1:100 Remember, the units of both the measurements should be the same ( i.e. cms:cms, meters:meters, Kms:Kms , feet:feet etc.)
  2. Depends on the size of the picture. They can vary from very detailed for planning and construction purposes that may be 1"=400', to large reconnaissance scales that would be about 1"=1 mile. Back in the 1930's through the 1960's traditional air photographs were taken from plans using cameras with 9" x 9" negatives. The scale was determined in the dark room by enlargement or reduction.
