  1. .psd files are the native file format for Photoshop. .pdf files are native files for Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader. .psd files are 20 times more precise and workable than .pdf files. Although you can save files from Photoshop as .pdf you loose a LOT of quality.
  2. If you can, do your initial processing as a Camera RAW in Photoshop RAW, then do more as a Photoshop native file. Photoshop native files (the .psd type) will support everything available in Photoshop. Although you can save a Photoshop .pdf and tell it to preserve Photoshop editing ability, there is no reason to do so unless you do it for sending to a printer, or other uses outside of the actual photo editing/manipulation. I save out my Photoshop files as .pdf files when I am printing on my desktop inkjet printer (I save them for "high quality print.") They seem to print faster than if I print from even a flattened Photoshop file. Photoshop native files allow you to do the most editing of your files.
