- Your GPS data must be imported into a Program such as Autocad or Leica Geosystems, them you create a Digital Terrain Model and set the elevation differences you require for the contour lines. e-mail me at Richardatf@yahoo,com. Also know that there are contour maps for every area in the US available on line. search for "quadrangle maps" and your state
- I presume your GPS gives elevation. Plot on your map your location and enter the elevation for that point. Continue to may other locations and repeat the process of marking the location with elevation. Depending upon your vertical scale, draw lines that approximate the same elevation. As an example, let x = 110, y = 120, z = 130 x..................y.............z ...x.............y..............z....... ..........x.........y........z........ .......x..............y.......z......... .........x........y......z.......... .......x...........y.......z........ ..........x...........y...z.......... ...............x..y...z............ Connect the xs together, the ys together and the zs together to get the contour. cp
- Convert your GPX file to a SHP file. Here's one tool to do it. It's a 30-day trial version. http://www.expertgps.com/gpx-shp.asp You'll need a GIS program and a base map for the same area. This page explains the process of making a contour map: http://nesoil.com/gpr/contours.htm
