New series of islands being built called "The World"?
This is supposed to be a series of islands that are being built, that when you have an aerial view they look like a map of Earth. Has anyone else heard of this. And how do you think this willl affect the environment, e.g., ocean life , change in water flow on earth, any others you can think of?

- it will be bad
- i read some story about this being done in the middle east - but it is theme park scale so it would have no effect at all

- Environmentally, this will only affect the local area -- the land mass we're talking about isn't large enough to do anything on a global scale. These islands are being built off the coast of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and will consist of some 300 islands which will be divided into private residences, commercial property and community living. As far as how it affects the local environment, it really depends on what was there to begin with. Whatever life may have lived in the area will be displaced, but the new shoreline should eventually become repopulated as sea life moves back in, once things have settled down. Projects like this tend to be very high visibility and top dollar, so it most likely won't mean they'll dump raw sewage or garbage directly into the ocean from their docks or front porch, because they'll want to keep the area clean and pretty for a long time to come. If there was a coral reef in the area that got destroyed in the process, that might take a lot longer to recover, but I'm pretty sure it will do so; like they said in "Jurassic Park," life finds a way.
- No effect. It is relatively small.
- they are doing this because of the island that are disappearing under water because of global warming
