NY city tour in one day? I live in DC and was planning a visit to NY city with my parents who themselves are visiting me from another country. The idea is to drive there early in the morning and return the same night. I am the only driver and I checked on google maps that its a 225 mile 4.5 hour drive. We would like to cover the main attractions - Statue of liberty, empire state, wall street, spend some time in time square. I was hoping that someone can suggest an itinerary for me. Where would I park my car, which garage/location should i try for full day parking and what will the charge be. In NY city, what's the best way to move around? subways? or taxis? My parents are around 60, can they manage the subway rides? Also If you could provide the ticket rates for the SOL and empires it would be great. Would you suggest booking a bus tour or something? I'm guessing those will turn out to be too expensive. Btw, this will be in April, so weather should not be a factor. Thanks
How to understand, read, and use the New York Subway map? I know I can read guide books about this, but none of them have been helpful. Four years ago, my family went to NY but missed out on riding the rails. Now, we're returning to the city, and riding the subway would be the best (and cheapest) way to see the city, as opposed ot taxis (which we used before... >.<). Problem is, we don't know how to read the darn map. Before in NYC, we went to Grand Central and asked the workers there how to read the map. They started off by saying, what all New Yorkers would probably say, "Oh, it's easy. All you do is..." and then I blacked out. After three explanations, we were just as lost as before. So, I am asking anyone out there, whether you live in NYC or not, to please provide me with a simple understanding of the subway system and how to read its map. A few questions I have: *What do the colors, letters and numbers mean/show? *What's the difference between them all? *Which routes travel east-to-west and which run north-to-south? *How many stops do trains make, and how do you know the location of their stops by the map? *When you get off one car, how do you know where you are? *How do you move from one train to the next (like do you return to the concourse or...what?) *How do you know which trains take you to which part of the city (or is that what the letters/numbers/colors do)? And, um, I can't think of any more right now. Basically, I just want help understanding how to read the map and then how to put it in use so that on our upcoming second trip, we don't get lost underground or end up... who knows where... And please don't just link me to other sites, like the MTA site. I've been there. It doesn't help. I just want a simple guide, a few knowledgable hints, etc. And, don't judge me, okay? I didn't grow up around the subway and the first time I encountered it was in NYC the first time, so I'm not used to it like New Yorkers would be. Thank you for any help. I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if it helps to explain, you can use this map for reference: http://mappery.com/maps/New-York-Subway-Map.gif
Is New York City as hard to navigate as it seems? I've lived in a small town all my life and will be going to New York City soon, but after looking at a few maps it all seems so hard to navigate. All I understand is that there are 3 main airports and the 5 boroughs, with a subway system connecting them all. And all these other names like "SoHo", "Chelsea", I have no clue what those are! Anyone who has moved to NY have any stories or advice?
What would be the best way to get from New Roc City to New York City with a large group (using public transp.)? Hello, I am currentlly planning a Senior trip and we will be staying at New Roc City (33 Lecount Pl, New Rochelle, NY 10801). From there we will take a charter bus in the morning to a subway station (which will then take us to New York), but I have no idea which one to take! All help is much appreciated. If anyone happens to know of an interactive site like Google Maps that takes into account subways (maybe Google Maps does, but I'm not sure).
What is the best way to get to my hotel in Brooklyn from the JFK airport? I will be staying at the La Quinta Inn at 533 3rd ave, Brooklyn NY during part of June of this year. I want to know what is the best way to get to my hotel from the JFK airport and back again. I don't want to pay for a cab, because I will need to learn how to use the city bus and subway system. On Yahoo's map of NYC there is what looks like a train or subway station at 9th st and 4th ave in Brooklyn. Is it a station and can I use it to get to and from JFK? Also can I use this station to get to Times Square and Central Park? Thanks.
How to get from Laguardia to 6th ave and 46th street (or near Rockefeller center)? Flying into LGA, staying at The Muse hotel. Wanting to get there via bus/subway to save some money. Seems like the NY shuttle bus service that costs 21 dollars will take just as long as going by public transit. Looking at maps, I'm wondering if I take the M60 bus and get off at the Astoria stop, if that is by the subway, and if it is possible to take that line into Manhattan. Or do I stay on the M60 and get off at 106th and Broadway and take a subway from there? Also, what line would I need to ride on the subway? I'm all about saving money, but not to the point where it would be a huge inconvenience. I will just have a small carry on size of luggage (with wheels). Please advise whether you think it is worth saving this bit of money or not. Example... taking the subway in Boston to go from Airport to just about anywhere into the city is not a struggle or hassle for me. In Chicago, taking the Metra from Naperville into the city, then walking to get on the blue line to get to Ohare is a hassle. Thank you very much in advance! I look forward to spending the weekend in your fine city!
