Where do I find a collection of world maps from past years? Im trying to learn some history just as a hobby but its very difficult to keep up because my geography is horrible and countries change names/sizes/etc all the time. Any one know of a website that has custom topographic gps maps from around the world? I found this website but forgot to bookmark it. You could browse the world by country and then by region and then by the type of map you were looking for. They had street, topographic, marine and I think sandbox maps. You could download each map in a couple of different formats including .img. I remember for California under topographic they had Monterey Bay, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe. For other countries I remember Afghanistan, New Zealand and the list went on forever.

To do this, I need accurate representations of the sizes of those countries. I've tried playing with the google maps API, but it's quite limited in the precision of the zoom you can use to compensate for the distortion which results from the projection. Any ideas?
