Where on the internet can I find topo maps for fishing purposes? For instance I fish the lock and dams near my house and I wanted a Topo map of the actual water. All I can find are topo maps of the land around the water. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Is there anywhere I can download topo maps for my Garmin GPS without the $100+ price tag? I got a Garmin GPSmap 60 for Christmas. You can download topo maps into it. I went to the Garmin website and they charge an excess of 100 dollars. Quite a steep price for an already quite expensive GPS unit. How to load maps from DeLorme Topo 6.0 to Magellan Explorist 500? A friend asked me to load his Explorist 500 with maps so he can go hunting this weekend. It came with DeLorme Topo USA 6.0. I am having trouble figuring out how to load just a general map area, without any route or waypoints or anything on it. When I go to the Exchange Wizard there are no object types listed. Is it possible to just load topo detail maps for a region on the GPS?

I need help with recieving Aerial/Topo maps for hunting? I live in Washington state.... Methods for dowsing digitized topo maps? A friend of mine recently took several thousand pictures of an area in the Gila Wilderness from a helicopter. In the process of examining the photos he found two aircraft crash sites that bore the appearance of never having been found. He didn't have a GPS connected to his camera and the crashes weren't what he was searching for, so he asked me to track down what I can about them, knowing only the general location they must be in because of the sequence of photos, shadows, terrain, and types of vegitation in the photos. In trying to locate the two sites I'm using Terrain Navigator on 7.5 minute USGS topos. The only method I've found thus far for dowsing it relies entirely on cursor position for trying to narrow things down. The distance tool and the route tool are both too cumbersome and won't allow straight-edge triangulation as you'd use for paper maps. Have any of you tried digitized map dowsing? Have you found a better method than the cursor location method?

topo maps and slopes? if u were asked what the most gentle slope of something was by looking at the contour lines, i know that when the closer the lines are the steeper the slope, but there is this one area that has a huge gap before the next contour line. its a pond, and there are no contour lines running through it. so would that mean it has a gentle slope? thanks for any help!

If one were to set up a topo map of a foreign country and run a war game, could it be used as propaganda? The idea would be setting up a topographical map, placing some pieces of cardboard on it to represent troops, and run a semi-private (think convention) war game with the stated idea that play war where no one gets hurt is far better than real war. Need help selecting GPS unit and good maps (topo, etc) for off-road/dirt road navigation.? I've been doing lots of research but I keep finding either outdated or conflicting info. What I need is a GPS that comes with, or will allow me to load maps that show old, barely used off road vehicle trails, hiking trails, and forest service roads. I'd prefer to have the option to actually navigate with these maps, or at least to add my own way points along selected routes so I can track. ALSO- It'd be nice if I could use the GPS for standard highway/city navigation and POI finding. So, in summary my questions are: Is it best to buy two separate units, like a nuvi AND something like the garmin colorado, or can I load decent navigable topos onto a nuvi and have a single unit? What are the implications of such a choice? Do the Garmin Colorado/Oregon/Dakota units have stronger reception than nuvis in canyons, etc, or are they just "more rugged"? When I look at a USGS topo map, how high would I be flying to see the area described by that map? A USGS map for a particular quadrangle in the 7.5 minute series has a scale of 2 5/8 " equaling one mile on the map. A map, then, shows about 7 miles in width. At what altitude would I be able to see this 7 mile wide swath?

Anyone with knowledge about USGS maps, please help? I have to make this topo map of my neighbor hood, and the school is purple. What I was taught, purple coloring meant limestone of some type (I don't have the book right next to me), why is the school the same color purple?
