How were maps drawn before aerial views could be made? I want to know how the world map was drawn hundreds of years ago before people could fly. Esp places like siberia and those regions which were hard to cross etc. I can't figure out how they knew to draw the coastlines etc.
does anyone know of a website that shows a clear view, whether it be aerial or driving view of street maps.? I am looking for a particular street but i want to see what type of street, if it's residential or industrial, i want to see the surroundings to make sure it doesn't lead me into a scary canyon.........................I had a bad experience, that's why this question sounds so strange.............................Oh, also that it's free....thanks.... Satellite would be excellent, i actually want to see the "street view", of course free!!!!
Are Aerial Maps Censored By The Government? I was looking at "Windows Live" aerial map of Washington D.C. When looking at key places, I noticed two things. The White House is visible to the lowest aerial view, but it's obvious that the roof covered over. And when I looked at the capital building, The building and immediate area around it is pixulated. Is this something that has been done voluntarily or was it mandated by the government for security purposes?
Do aerial maps provided by Mapquest, Yahoo and Google provide blueprints for terrorists? Just makes it too easy to plan an attack if you have a pretty detailed view of the target.
Where can I find maps of land plats with aerial views & addresses in Liberty county Texas ? I want to find the addresses to properties & who owns them
Best online PC game (CONQUEST)aerial view (not ground level)? I played a few military online games like EA Games "Generals" and "Zero Hour" (aerial view) and "Company of Heroes" (aerial view) I can't stand games where your ground level like "Socom" and "Doom" they make me sick. I like games where you can see an aerial view of the entire map like Generals and Company of Heroes. "Company of Heroes" is the best online aerial view game I have ever played. Full of WW2 action. I tryed Civilization IV and Ages of Empire 3 and wasn't too impressed. It takes too long to build. I don't like games that take forever to build forces. Does anyone know a great online conquest game that meets the following requirements? (AERIAL VIEW ONLY) (PC GAME ONLY) -Takes place in the darkages, civilwar or midevil times? -Fast build of units -Each game will usually last no longer than 4 hrs -Great graphics. -Free online play. Does anything know a PC game similar to Company of Heros but different era?
Why haven't mapping sites updated their aerial pictures? There is a beautiful new sports stadium in the east side of Allentown, PA, but the latest aerial view from any of the map sites, at best only shows partial construction of the stadium.

Why does google have the right to record the front of my home on google maps? Isn't it an invasion of privacy? if you put an address in google maps you can get a street view and it is as if you are walking down your street it is very ridiculous In earlier years they had aerial views but this is too close for comfort...any thoughts?
Best color printer that prints up to 13x19? I do some printing of topographic maps, aerial views, etc and need a printer to do these. I do not need high photo quality, but do need better than my regular color lasers that do not print this large format. Any suggestions?
What was Google Street View actually created for? I mainly look at it out of curiousity, to explore, and, ahem, "stalk", if you will. But what constructive/meaningful purpose is it for? I mean, traditional aerial maps are good enough to find places.
what is google program with picture maps from ground? what is the name of the google thing that you can see the maps from the streets instead of the aerial views?
How often do they take the satellite images that you can zoom in on at websites like google maps? I was just being nosy and was looking at the aerial (sp?) view of my city and noticed that it is a rather old view. A library that has been open for a few years now is just in it's construction stage at the point the images were taken on the map. Just curious if anyone knows.
What is the best website to view close-up maps, topo maps, etc.? I'm looking for the best site to get an aerial photo of our rural property.
Can anyone name this old-school computer game? It involved guiding the guy around the map from aerial view. Sometimes pushing boxes int the water so you could walk on them. Most levels involved collecting different colored keys that corresponded to different locks. Also there were sometimes squares of the map that were marked with blue arrows and they made you move in the direction of the arrows when you walked onto them.
Why are Google Maps aerials of such poor quality? Google seems to get all of the acclaim over their maps, but in reality their aerials are very poor for much of the United States. For example, not a square mile of Ottawa County, Michigan, despite being the 243rd largest county out of 3,141 US counties, can be viewed in high res. Lubbers Stadium, Allendale, Michigan, Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.968859,-85.894632&spn=0.02933,0.058365&t=k&z=14&om=1 http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/4842/lubbersgoogleet2.png That is as good as it gets for Ottawa County, Michigan! Same view, on Yahoo Maps: http://maps.yahoo.com/broadband#mvt=s&q1=allendale+mi&trf=0&lon=-85.894713&lat=42.968871&mag=1 http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/1264/lubbersyahoogd5.png Same view, on Microsoft Virtual Earth: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=42.968953~-85.894761&style=a&lvl=17&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&encType=1 http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/3182/lubbersmicrosoftrz5.p
Are the houses in this picture mansions or average houses? Would the houses in this neighborhood be considered mansions or average homes? http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&ie=UTF8&ll=43.461931,-79.645423&spn=0.001289,0.002494&t=k&z=19&om=1 (its a link to a google maps/aerial view page)
How Do I get corrected an inacccurate address location on mapquest and google maps & GPS devices? When you type my address into google maps or mapquest it gives the wrong location. This is namely due to the fact that the street I live on was built 5 years ago. It is an extentsion of an existing street and it shows up on the aerial photos if you change to that view. Is there anyway to contact the vendors who provide this info. to Google, MapQuest and other GPS devices. If people use what is there, they wind up on the wrong side of a busy street and it is one of those "you can't get there from here" situations, w/o doing a lot of turns. Many thanks.
What website allows me to see pictures of houses anywhere in the country? I have an address that might be of a celebrity. id like to see the house on aerial view on a good website. does anybody know of any good websites besides google maps or mapquest?

What is the technology/method used to create WORLD MAP, when it is first Invented? Modern days we have satelites, and we can see the aerial view etc.,. In ancient times when the WORLD map first invented, what was the tool they used. And how come they know the complex contour of landscape.
Where can I find maps of my street with views from the front yard? I was given a site a while back to get directions and there were images of the front of peoples' homes. It was like someone was standing in my front yard taking a picture. I ended up looking at all of my family's homes as well...all over the state. You could drag the picture up and down any street and see the car in the driveway, the license plate of the car and the address on the front door...very close up. Not aerial views...views from street level. I've tried YahooMaps and GoogleEarth and several others but these maps are not the same as the views I saw before. Can anyone help me?? Thank you! Just found it!
Where can I get an aerial vew of my house? A few months ago I saw an aeriel view of my house and my red car was there. My house wasn't even built yet in all of the maps I can find now! Anyone know where I can get a new map? I don't need directions or anything I just like to look at stuff.
I found my mother's address, and I want to know what type of home she lives in, any suggestions? I know her full address, zip, city, state, street, but I want to know if she lives in a house, trailer, apt, condo, etc. I am so curious, but she'd never tell me the truth, so I can't ask her. I went to the google maps, mapquest, yahoo maps and tried to do the aerial view, but to no avail. I checked out real estate, but since no one around her is listed, no one came up. She has 6 neighbors, numbers all different. They live on one street, but the numbers are pretty spaced. The address numbers are 905, 507, 316, 560, 703, and one number (728) is used for two people. It sounds like maybe trailers, but I'm not sure, and I'd hate to assume the wrong thing. Anyway, I'd like to visually see her neighborhood and street and surroundings, and the aerial maps don't zoom in that far. Is there anything else I can do?
Would I be violating any federal, state or local laws if I did the following? The tax appraiser for my county has aerial maps attached to their website, where one can view their property as it's seen from the air. I believe they update these photos every few years, likely reviewing them to note if any new structures have been built on properties, thereby assisting them in identifying which properties need to be taxed more. I have a large yard and I was thinking of planting bushes in a configuration that would spell obscene words that would be viewable from the air, but not the ground. Would this get me in trouble if it made it into the next set of aerial photographs?
Is there a Store map somewhere? Is there a website where i can get a map of all stores? like a google map or map quest aerial view of all stores in an area. Thanks
How should a draw a location map and draw additional sketches to show relative dimensions? I've been given a project to do before starting uni based on 'Shelters' of any kind as an investigation to look at space. I have to have freehand drawings of the 'Shelter' showing relative dimensions in relationship to my body - How should I show this?! I also have to include a site showing the location, should I do this as an aerial view or from a perspective? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are these the right directions to Mileys house? My sister is a huge fan of Mileys and wants to see if she can take a picture of her house, now I found pictures of it and actually got an aerial view on Google maps, but I'm not sure if its right and there seems to be some kind of gate and long road so you cant see her house.....tell me if the pictures match so I can tell my sister we cant go. 1) Pic of House http://www.teenmag.com/celeb-stuff/miley-month/miley-cyrus-house 2) Google Map ( you can also click on street view to zoom around and see gate, her house has the 3 cars I believe ) http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=toluca+lake,+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.160552,59.765625&ie=UTF8&ll=34.146352,-118.347012&spn=0.004227,0.007296&t=h&z=17&om=1 Does it match?? Does anyone know of a site ? Does anyone know of a site where you can get maps of Aerial views of any address you want it to go. I am looking for the ones that look like real photos where you could put in your home address and see the top of your house and your property.
Development in Albuquerque NM? I saw this aerial view of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in the northwest, nw of Rio Rancho, i saw rows and rows of unpaved streets with no development there whatsoever. The streets are named, and have a grid numbering system, but nothing there. There's a large unpaved avenue running diagonally down the center, called Encino Road. This area is west of I-25 and south of route 550. Does anyone know what the deal is here? I found it via Google Maps with a satellite view. I searched for Rio Rancho, NM. If you switch to satellite mode, you'll see the streets. There's no homes or businesses there, either. There's nothing for miles.
Past Google Maps Street Views? Google Earth already has the option to look back in time using aerial shots. But I was wondering if you could access the past versions of street view. ( I need a photo of a building that was torn down several years ago.)
Chiltern Hills, Grand Designs? Can these houses bit seen in aerial views on Google maps
New series of islands being built called "The World"? This is supposed to be a series of islands that are being built, that when you have an aerial view they look like a map of Earth. Has anyone else heard of this. And how do you think this willl affect the environment, e.g., ocean life , change in water flow on earth, any others you can think of?
Dream Interpretation? I PROMISE 10 points best answer????? Hello, I had a dream last night...the first thing i remember is seeing an aerial view of the atlantic coast states...it looked like a map at first but i could see things happening in the map (I don't live on the atlantic coast)...as i was viewing the map, i noticed a car driving from New York to Michigan...it was me driving the car. It was like i was looking down at myself. I noticed all the details as the car was moving, convenient stores, shops etc...i then saw myself park the car near a lake. I then saw myself fishing (i don't fish). I caught 1 fish, then i got back in my car and went to a mental hospital. I admitted myself in it and then i entered a room where i saw a boy chasing a ghost of a woman around another map of the U.S and there were 2 or three unknown people in the background...i had the same exact dream of the scene where the boy was chasing the ghost and the background people a week ago, there was just more detail before that in my last dream....i would appreciate...... ...any advise or an interpretation on this....i have had dreams where iview things from space in dreams before, it is very weird because it's like i'm viewing earth from space! again i would appreciate advise on this.........

Is there a name for this kind of traditional English residential house? I would like to know more about the 2 to 4-story residential houses that one can see around London, characterised by a garden and a lower attachment at the back and bay windows on the front. In particular, I would like to know if this type has a distinct name, so that I could do further research, and the original function of the attached building. Please follow this link for an aerial view of such houses to the north of Finsbury Park: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=skx69cgzr556&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=12446357&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1 Thanks!

Alright what is the point of Google Earth? Basically I love Google maps. I figured that you could customize Google Earth to be a better version of Google Maps, but that doesn't seem to be the case. A lot of people rant and rave about this being a must program, but I don't see it. I went to my house and zoomed in, and all I see is some extremely low quality aerial view of the top of my house. I'm trying to not jump to conclusions, but a lot of people put this on their top 10 favorite programs, if you could give me a little insight as to whether you love/hate this program and why, that would be great.
Are British inmates allowed to use computers and the internet?....? If so, what are the restrictions, if any? It's just at the moment i am on Google Earth, and out of curiosity i typed in the name of a place where a relative spent some time in prison. and it has an aerial view of the whole prison, exits, main entrances, basically a map of the prison grounds. And it occurred to me, a prisoner could use Google Earth to work out the safest and fastest means of escaping, and places where guards are and aren't likely to be, and security levels during days and nights. And not only that, they could get timetables from the internet and plan their escape to coincide with a bus or other public transport arriving. To The Citadel: They COULD guess...if you spend all day around them, then surely you'd notice a few places where they go everyday. well the prison where my relative was had the bus stop right outside of the visiting room, and main gate was right next door to it. From what I've gathered, they're not exactly given a guided tour of the prison, so they'd need Google for Google Earth and whatever Timetables they wanted.
movie title. someone help!!!? Ok, so i cant think of the name of this movie and its driving me nuts. Its about a guy that's a serial killer and a detective is trying to track him. In one scene the detective is putting push-pins into this map on all the places they've found bodies and when hes done the push-pins form a big spiral on the map. In the ending scene hes in a desert-type place and hes on his knees getting ready to shoot his self and the camera zooms out (above-aerial view) and hes in the middle of a huge spiral (similar to the one on the map). Oh yea! and in one of the first scenes he's shown scraping the pads of his fingers (removing fingerprints) with a pumice stone (i think thats what its called). Anyone know what this movie is? its been driving me nuts and it'd be greatly appreciated if anyone could remember. -thx much
What do you think about this? My Movie Screenplay: Fades in: Day: Position: View of concrete on road, set down. Music plays: A white Mercury/Thunderbird drives past the camera. Front: The car drives toward the camera. Shots of the car driving keep appearing: Inside car: Derrick: Finally, a vacation.. Henry (unnamed): Yeah, seriously. It's about time. Derrick: Do you think we're gonna like it? Henry: If I know the place right, It's going to be awesome.. Position: Back, right: Car drives past. Inside Car: Derrick: Hey, can you hand me the map? Henry: Um.. I think It's in here somewhere (Thinking while saying). Derrick: Well, you better find it, because I don't know where to turn. Henry: Oh, there it is! (Surprised) Henry hands Derrick the map. Henry: Did you find it? Derrick: Yeah, we're almost there. Henry: That was faster than I thought it would be. Derrick: So, who owns the place? Henry: My great grandparents did, until they passed away, so our family just owns it now. We haven't been here in a while.. so I don't know the type of shape It's in. Derrick: Is it even sleepable? Henry: I hope so, it was last time, but It's been so long.. Derrick: There isn't anyone for miles, so It can't be trashed. Henry: I don't know, there used to be people out here.. Derrick: What do you mean "used to be"? Henry: They all moved out, people were randomly killing themselves.. There could be a happy and joyful person, and one day they would just snap, and kill themself. It was so spontanious that no one knew what to think. They thought the area was haunted. Derrick: And why did you think it would be cool to come out here? Henry: I don't believe any of that bullshit. I think they were just tired of their own pathetic lifes and decided to commit suicide. Derrick: What if it is really "haunted". Henry: Dude, seriously. That stuff isn't even real. It's made up shit, just to scare people. Derrick: Yeah, your probably right.. Henry: Are we getting any closer? Derrick: We should be there in about 15 minutes. Henry: Jesus, there isn't anything to do! Derrick: Why didn't you bring anything? Henry: Like what? Derrick: I don't know, an iPod, you could have watched a movie. Henry: Last time I brought expensive things on vacation, I left it! Derrick: Well that's your fault. Henry: Did you bring anything I could use? Derrick: Um.. my iPod should be somewhere in there.. Henry: Oh, yeah.. I see it. Derrick: There isn't much on it. Henry: Wow! Lady Gaga? That's pathetic Derrick.. Derrick: Dude! That wasn't me.. I swear to god my sister put that on there. Henry: Yeah, but that doesn't explain your fruity ass videos.. Derrick: You can blame all that gay stuff on my sister. Henry: Whatever, do YOU have anything on here? Derrick: I told you, not much, but there is SOME stuff. Henry: Wow, the only rap you have is by Eminem. That's pathetic. Derrick: He's awesome, shut up. Henry: I swear to god, you have horrible taste.. Derrick: There should be a movie on there. Henry: What's it called? Derrick: Scarface. Henry: Finally, something we both agree on. Music starts again: Clips of the videos keep showing, aerial views, side views, lower views. Derrick: Henry--HENRY! Headphones are still on. Henry: What?! Derrick: Where do I turn? Henry: Left.. Wow, this looks nothing like I remember.. Derrick: Yeah, this is NOT SLEEPABLE! Henry: I didn't say it was for sure! Derrick: Your sorry ass is just lucky we brought a tent. Henry: I'm sorry, but this is WAY shittier than I remember.. Derrick: It's not HORRIBLE, we just probably shouldn't go in that house. Henry: Why?! Derrick: I don't want to catch anything! Henry: Panzy. Derrick: I'm not going in it. Henry: Than what could we possibly do? Derrick: I don't know, hike? Henry: There might be a creek somewhere around here.. From what I remember. Derrick: Oh, well we could do that to. And I brought my portable DVD player. Henry: Oh, cool. How big is the tent? Derrick: Oooo, not that big... It's not really ment for two people our size. Henry: Well, that sucks. Derrick: Hey, we still have to enjoy this vacation while it lasts. Henry: Yeah, I don't want to go in English with that bitch Mrs. Drake. Derrick: Oh, I know! That is hell! Okay, we better set up the tent. Henry: Yeah, probably. They continue to set up tent... Derrick: Okay, what should we do now? Henry: It's starting to get late, we should probably go in the tent. Derrick: Yeah, but we should watch a movie first, It's not that late. The two get in the tent. Henry: What movie should we watch? Derrick: Let's see, we could watch.. "The Godfather"? Henry: Okay, that sounds good. Shots of Henry and Derrick are shown: Derrick: Wow, that was good!

Last time I stopped at the overlook in Annapolis Maryland, the WWII memorial had a symbol that appeared to point to the Annapolis School stands you can view it through either of these two links, one to a picture that I made of it and one to a google map aerial http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=38.998415%2C%20-76.482135&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl http://caesarrodneyhs.com/annapolis_overlook.gif I cannot find any referrence to its meaning, can anyone help?
I need to find a satellite map of a piece of property in Maine. I have the lot number, but can't find a ma... I need to get an fairly detailed view of a piece of property in Van Buren ME zip 04785. It's truly rural up there and the deed says it's lot number 69 bordered by Alexander Rd. Any clues? It also says that it right of way access is from Desgardins Rd and Cyr Rd, but there doesn't appear to be those ROADs in that town. Cyr Ave (not road) is nowhere near Alexander.... So I'm befuddled. The property is up for sale and the buyer wants to know how much timber has been cut since I last saw it.... like 20 years ago. The buyer is out of state, too. Any suggestions? Google virtual maps, yahoo, etc can't seem to locate the roads and I want to email the potential buyer a satalltite or aerial photo.
Is this crosswalk gay? To answer my question, please view this aerial image of a street in Phoneix, AZ: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Phoneix,+Arizona&ie=UTF8&t=k&ll=33.480549,-112.004306&spn=0.000555,0.001904&z=20 Do you see the crosswalk on the right? Can someone please explain to me why they decided to make it go off to the side like that and why it's not straight like the other crosswalks? The roads are not curverd, it's a basic 4 way intersection. That really irritates me to the point that I want to fly to Phoneix and destroy that road. I would die if I had to walk across that slanted thing ... OH GOD it makes me cringe just thinking about it. Dude, I meant is it gay because it's not straight ... get it ... LMAO, I'm hilarious. Dude, I meant is it gay because it's not straight ... get it ... LMAO, I'm hilarious.
Could the California fires have been prevented? This question is somewhat rhetorical, but what is your opinion? CDF is saying that the fires were caused by lightning strikes. Well. After a lightning strike, how many hours or even DAYS does it take for a fire to get out of control, even with bad conditions? At any time, anyone can view SUPER accurate lightning strike maps all over the net, like this one... http://www.intellicast.com/Storm/Severe/Lightning.aspx. SO, why the HECK don't they do aerial survey's as soon as the weather lets up at all locations where a strike took place to try and catch a smoldering fire before it grows into a monster? Seems COMPLETELY simple to me! Maybe however the incentive is to let the fire get out of hand so that they can make a killing on hazard pay. After all, their pay doubles, triples, or even quadruples depending on the disaster... That means that the longer they take to put out the 1100 fires, the more money there is to be made... Maybe the pay should go down the longer it takes to put out... Well, there are a lot of interesting answers to begin with, some question my knowledge of both California, and the fires... Maybe I should make it completely clear as to my credentials for asking such a question... I live in california, am an airline pilot, and when I'm not flying passengers from point a to point b, I fly part time for clear channel and chase everything from bank robbers and ambulances to yes, even fires. I fly one of the only civilian airplanes that actually is allowed within the restricted areas where these fires are fought, and DAILY I fly within about a mile of these DC-10s and C-130s dropping retardant. California is only in a drought because they let all the water out of the resevoirs in the winter. California is NOT all rolling hills with dry brush. They do NOT do aerial surveys post lightning strikes unless something is reporter, and 30 acres in two hours is NOTHING! A DC-10 could put that out with 10% of its load and be on-site in about 30 minutes... IF... Moral of the story? If they did an aerial survey an hour after the strikes and dispatched the CDF aircraft, these fires would be a non-issue... But they don't... And they get out of hand... And here we are with a bunch of people answering the question who think just like everyone else... THEY DON'T THINK... They DON'T PREPARE... THEY ONLY REACT, after its too late! The only good answer so far is pertaining to liberals... If the gosh darn environmental hippie liberals would allow the fire departments to CLEAR OUT the dry brush and destroy the habitat of the pink spotted nocturnal south african midget one legged spider, we wouldn't be having this issue... BUT, if someone did some preventative surveying, we wouldn't have this problem either! So far, the only decent answers is regarding the liberals... AND... For the fem who seems so insluted she is probably a firemens wife, I'M NOT INSULTING THE FIRE FIGHTERS, so get off it and use your brain rather than retreat into a pissed off defense mechanism... The firemen are the soldiers and they do a fine job... Its the fire chief's, the governor, etc., anyone else who establishes policy and decides how to target and fight fires... Its a reactive based policy, instead of proactive... And don't talk about roads either or hard to get places, your not listening to my obvious rant about using AIRPLANES! they have been around for more than a hundred years now! You people are all making excuses!!! One after the other! Have you seen the kind of insane technological advances our military has, from unmanned drones to advanced tactical stealth fighters, and God knows what else... Night vision thermo goggles which can detect body heat thousands of yards away... Are ALL OF YOU SERIOUSLY that naive to think this problem couldn't easily be solved if we just put some thought into it! Google has satellite images that are so crisp you can see people sunbathing nude in their backyard, add google streets, and now we're in 3d... If you seriously think for one second that we couldn't easily solve this problem then congratulations for being another moron in America. Seriously I feel like this country is piling up with stupid people by the minute. Where have all the smart people gone? One good answer and it gets my votes... If we did do controlled fires, this wouldn't be 1100 fires, maybe it would be half, or even a quarter. Either way, the best answer here!
What do you think of THIS???? Print view Billions at stake in border contract By Dave Montgomery McClatchy Newspapers PREV 1 of 3 NEXT Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff sees a mix of technology and manpower. WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is expected next month to choose an industry consortium to erect a high-tech security shield along the U.S. borders, launching one of the federal government's most ambitious public-works projects in years. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) calls the proposed Secure Border Initiative Net (SBInet) the "most comprehensive effort in the nation's history" to gain control of more than 6,000 miles of border with Mexico and Canada, and 2,000 miles of coastline. SBInet is a centerpiece of President Bush's efforts to fortify the U.S.-Mexico border at a time Congress is locked in a struggle to revise the nation's immigration laws. Administration officials say they intend to proceed with the security net regardless of the outcome of the debate over immigration legislation. The multibillion-dollar undertaking has ignited a contract battle among industry teams headed by four leading defense companies — Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon — and Ericsson, the Swedish-based telecommunications giant with U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas. Competitors diverse Collectively, the teams are composed of nearly 40 companies in more than 15 states, a diverse lineup that includes global engineering firms, niche industries adept at biometric identification or surveillance, and aerospace corporations better known for churning out warplanes, tanks and missiles. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a branch of the DHS, is expected to announce a winner by Sept. 30. As envisioned by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, SBInet would marry industry expertise with the 42,000-employee Customs and Border Protection to create a wall of technology, manpower and infrastructure in the next six years. The initial cost is projected at $2.5 billion, but the price could be much higher. The shield is a dominant component of the Secure Border Initiative that Chertoff announced in November to stem the flow of illegal immigrants. More than 1.2 million illegal immigrants were arrested in 2005, nearly all on the southern border. Although Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Michael Jackson told industry officials the project is "not about simply buying gizmos," much of the attention has focused on the potential mix of technology. Most of the proposals include state-of-the-art sensors, mounted cameras, unmanned aerial vehicles, radar and other surveillance hardware. Calls for toughening the border have intensified with the approach of the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the recent alleged terrorist bomb plot in Britain. But the project has come under heightened scrutiny on Capitol Hill after a congressional report last month blasted DHS procurement polices. The bipartisan report, released by the House Committee on Government Reform, identified $34.3 billion worth of DHS contracts marred by significant overcharges, wasteful spending or mismanagement. The troubled projects include a largely ineffective camera-surveillance system along the Mexican and Canadian borders. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., complained that SBInet could be exposed to the same problems, contending the DHS is giving industry too much latitude in determining how the system should be tailored. "That's not governing," he said. "It's utter incompetence, and it's going to cost the taxpayers billions." From the bidders' vantage point, SBInet could create thousands of jobs and illustrate the defense industry's expanding transition into homeland security. Tools of war — such as radar and satellite surveillance — easily can be redirected into the campaign to guard the home front, industry officials say. "We see it as an increasing market," said John Douglass, president and chief executive officer of the Aerospace Industries Association. "Many of the technologies that make you a successful aerospace contractor would also make you a successful homeland-security contractor." Several of the team members started preparing for the project more than two years ago, when the DHS was considering a since-abandoned border initiative called America's Shield. Team representatives spent months on the border, and several bidders set up remote border-area test sites to evaluate equipment. Nearly 60 potential bidders expressed interest in the project before the DHS winnowed the field to the five rival teams. Universities in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona are aligned with several of the teams, reflecting academia's growing expertise in homeland security and border demographics. Bidders made oral presentations in the past two weeks and have until Monday to update their proposals. While SBInet bristles with opportunity, the winning team will face immense obstacles in trying to create a leakproof "virtual wall" traversing rugged desert terrain in the south and mountainous, wooded landscape in the north. The challenges probably will include property-rights disputes and environmental issues. Sensors and cameras have been operating along the borders for years; the SBInet team will be charged with building a system tying all the pieces together. In addition to technology, the industry team will provide contract personnel for non-law-enforcement jobs and train government agents to adapt to the new system. Sensors popular item In January, Jackson urged industry officials to be innovative without straying "onto the wacky edge of creativity." Most proposals call for a network of thousands of sensors that would detect movement, sound and, in some cases, odor. The sensor then would flash an alarm on a computerized map in a command-and-control center, where an operator would train a long-range mounted camera on the site to determine whether an animal or a human intruder tripped the alarm. If necessary, agents would be dispatched. Several, if not all, of the teams would augment the protection with unmanned surveillance aircraft and, in some cases, high-altitude surveillance balloons 'alberto" this is a REALITY that IS going to happen!!!! Get USED TO IT!!!!!! DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS>>>>>>>>>> SUPPORT HR 4437!!!!!!!!! Hasta la bye bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
