Summary: day. We finally found out why online when an advisory from the National Weather Service described smoke blowing into the mid-Atlantic from wildfires in Quebec. That's a distance of 700 miles! 2pm satellite view of Quebec wildfire smoke over Maryland.NASA has some very nice images and Quicktime movies posted:
